Hundreds of refugees and migrants are dying each year, and thousands more are suffering extreme human rights abuses, at the hands of smugglers, traffickers, militias and State authorities, on journeys from West and East Africa towards and inside Libya and Egypt. In a new report – ‘On this journey, no one cares if you live or die.’ Abuse, protection, and justice along routes between East and West Africa and Africa’s Mediterranean coast – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and the Mixed Migration Centre at the Danish Refugee Council are calling on States to take concerted action to protect and assist survivors of these barbaric abuses and to take greater steps to hold those responsible to account.
